What happened

Two pedestrians were seriously injured when a driver struck them at University Avenue and Eighth Street in Berkeley on Wednesday, October 7, according to Berkeley police. The injured pedestrians are a 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman, police said.

In its 1 p.m. update on Thursday, October 8, The Berkeley Scanner reported that police said both were awake and alert at the hospital.

What police have reported

The preliminary police account describes a dark sedan traveling east on University Avenue and striking the pedestrians in the eastern crosswalk. Police said the driver left the scene.

The Scanner’s review of emergency logs places a 911 call at 8:50 p.m.; the police release says officers responded at about 9 p.m. A neighbor who spoke with The Scanner said he went outside after hearing the crash to see whether he could help.

An earlier road closure had ended by The Scanner’s 12:50 a.m. update on October 8.
